SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (November 25, 2002) ? PIER 39, San Francisco's two-level, outdoor, festival marketplace attraction, expects to save tens of thousands of dollars in equipment and productivity costs this year, using its new Definity communication system. The voice and data solution is designed by Avaya (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communications networks and services, and delivered by Pacific Bell and Bay Area communications service company Unified TelData (UTDI), a Silver Certified Avaya BusinessPartner and Avaya Diamond dealer.
Its new streamlined communication system links three entities -- the PIER 39 Administrative Office, its Blue and Gold Ferry services, and its main restaurant services -- to one network (switch).
According to Peter Brown, UTDI [title], the system will completely network all PIER 39 employees. The end result will be added feature functionality like voice mail, unified messaging, Net access, and call accounting to track phone calls and additions made to the network. It will also increase employee productivity, freeing up receptionists by automating traditional tasks.
“Over the past year, we helped PIER 39 peel back the onion to see what Internet, cellular and connectivity equipment and services they were actually paying for. Avaya helped negotiate and funnel it all down to a streamlined application, plus helped PIER 39 upgrade at no additional cost. We found things to eliminate, and offered systems they could eventually own. After five years, they will pay only for telephone access,” said Brown.
“UDTI navigated us through an in-depth examination of PIER 39's surprisingly complicated telecommunication requirements and designed a system that was cash-flow positive from day one. The Definity design meets our existing communication needs, takes advantage of our new VPN [virtual private network] and is conveniently expandable to our other businesses,” said Dann Hovey, Chief Financial Officer of PIER 39 San Francisco.
The 200-phone station set-up will use 1,200 feet of redundant, multimode fiber optic cable, fixing eroding copper lines laid under PIER 39. Phone service and support will be available 24x7 from Avaya’s Northwest Operations Center, with UTDI as the local back-up.
