Top San Francisco Tourist Attraction Saves Thousands with New Avaya Network - Converged voice and data infrastructure serves three sites across 45-acre campus

For immediate release:  Wednesday, May 28, 2003 BASKING RIDGE, NJ and SAN FRANCISCO, CA , US - Avaya Inc. (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of communications networks and services for businesses, today announced that it is helping PIER 39, San Francisco's top tourist attraction, improve its bottom line with a new converged communication network. The Avaya solution for PIER 39 was delivered by San Francisco-based Unified TelData (UTDI), a national systems integrator and Silver-certified Avaya BusinessPartner.

In response to a nationwide drop in travel in the wake of September 11, PIER 39 Chief Financial Officer Dann Hovey conducted a top-to-bottom analysis of the organization's cost structure. In particular he began to look for a way to reduce telecommunications costs. The new Avaya network eliminates recurring costs, while providing the facility with a more reliable platform for data as well.

"We want to be as smart as we can be in our operations," Hovey said. "With a new private network engineered to support both our voice and data needs, we reduced our net costs by 10% or more each year."

Based on an Avaya DEFINITY® server and Avaya Communication Manager call processing software, the solution for PIER 39 distributes telephony features over a single fiber optic network that also serves the organization's data needs — replacing its former service and frame relay data network. As a result, Avaya was able to help PIER 39 cost-effectively and reliably deliver voice and data capability to three distinct entities across the 45–acre site — the PIER 39 Administrative Office, its Blue and Gold Ferry services, and PIER Restaurants L.P. — linking them in a campus–like environment.

The new network delivers added functionality to PIER 39 — from highly reliable voice mail and unified messaging capabilities to Internet access and call accounting and network management features. It is IP telephony–enabled and provides easy expansion capability should PIER 39 choose to offer network services to any of the shops, restaurants and attractions based within the complex.

"By linking our facilities over a single voice and data network, we have more reliability than before and for the first time have the opportunity to create a global database for real-time decision-making," Hovey said. "Overall we will have better accountability since we now have software tools that will enable us to track our communication expenses by department, giving our business unit managers the information they need to make smarter decisions."

Around–the–clock remote monitoring of the network is provided by Avaya Global Services through its Northwest Operations Center, with onsite support provided by UTDI.
